Pioneer Courthouse Square and Pioneer Place
The center of Portlands light rail system when it meets the bus transitway, Pioneer Square is a public square surrounded by shopping and the Pioneer Courthouse. It was the Portland hotel from 1891 to 1950 when it was torn down to make way for a parking lot. It was donated to the city in 1979 and is now considered to be the center of Portland. Pioneer Place Mall is adjacent and is a good example of how to connect a shopping mall to transit and the rest of the city. It offers many entrances, and tunnels and skyways to adjacent buildings.
